Laser Vision Correction Making Waves

Wavefront/CustomVue technology heightens interest in an already popular way to lose your glasses (on purpose).

It has been embraced by the U.S. Navy, law enforcement and emergency services personnel, and even Olympic athletes.  You probably know a friend or family member who has had the procedure.

Add to this the routinely outstanding results patients get with the Wavefront/CustomVue technology, and it’s easy to see why laser vision correction is an extremely popular and easy way to rid oneself of glasses or contact lenses.

“We were getting very good results before Wavefront was introduced,” says Dr. Donald Serafano, Medical Director at ViewPoint, “but now we are simply getting better outcomes for more people than ever before.”

Considered the biggest breakthrough in laser vision correction since the invention of the laser itself, Wavefront generates a detailed and personalized map of the imperfections in the eye. Much like a fingerprint, each person’s visual error is unique and can now be captured and mapped using what’s called a WaveScan system.  The information is digitally recorded and transferred to the laser, allowing the ensuing procedure to be customized according to the specific refractive errors of the patient. [WaveScan refers to the “map” generated, while CustomVue is the procedure based on the diagnostic results.]

The results posted since CustomVue/WaveScan was introduced more than three years ago have been truly impressive: most people get a post-operative level of vision that is equal to what they had with glasses or contacts, and a significant number of individuals are achieving a level of vision that exceeds the corrected vision they enjoyed before their procedure.

“Some patients are achieving a level of vision that is 20/20 or better,” adds Dr. Serafano, “but perhaps most exciting is the fact that the technology opens up the procedure to some people who were otherwise not candidates for laser vision correction.”

“CustomVue was the deciding factor for me,” says Norma Dawson who had her procedure at ViewPoint with Dr. Serafano.  “I am a fairly conservative person,” adds the lawyer, “but the results people were getting with CustomVue really tipped the scales for me.”

Dawson is not alone.

Laser vision correction is often referred to as America’s most popular form of elective surgery, with upwards of one million procedures performed each year.

As the Mayo Clinic’s Dr. Leo Maguire recently told The Washington Post: “Refractive surgery has the highest patient satisfaction rates and highest quality-of-life improvement scores of any operation that is done.”
